Seisiún na h-Éireann
Seisiun na h-Eireann, a unique Irish festival of Traditional Irish Music is celebrating its third anniversary this year. The festival entails a Traditional Irish Music Competition, which is due to take part in the picturesque village of Quin, Co. Clare, Ireland on September 29th – October 1st 2006
The Third Annual running of the Festival has a prize fund of €8,000 of which the winner receives €5,000 and 2nd, 3rd and 4th places each receive €1,000 and other token prizes (all additional prizes are subject to confirmation). Publicans also receive a plaque for their pub declaring their status as Winner of Seisiun Na h-Eireann – Best Trad Session in Ireland. The winner will get to record a CD.
Sessions will take place in the pubs of Quin between Friday Sept 29th and Sunday Oct 1st
Last year’s event boasted 18 groups of famous and upcoming musicians representing traditional Irish music pubs all over Ireland. The village was alive with the best traditional music in Ireland for a full three days culminating in the final session, which was won outright by musicians representing one of the local pubs - The Abbey Tavern Pub, Quin.
This year’s event promises to deliver an equally exciting feast of music with an expected large number of repeat entries and lots of new talent that we are eager to hear during the festival weekend. The village of Quin will again be alive with music, recitation, dance agus craic go leor.
In addition to sessions in all 4 pubs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, there will be an Art and Craft Exhibition held in the community hall from 12 noon to 5pm on Saturday .
Last year’s entries included musicians and performers from Glenties, Bristol, Belgium, Bundoran, Bunratty, Newry, Mountshannon, Miltown Malbay, Achill Island, Ennis, Kinnity, Kilkenny, Cork, Cree, Carrigaholt, Crosskeys, Cavan, Lisseycasey, Limerick, Doolin, Sligo, Sixmilebridge, Tuam, Temple Bar, and of course we had entries from the Village of Quin.
All the prize money has been raised locally by the festival committee, the publicans and members of the community. The festival fund has already donated 500 Euro to Quin National School.
Entries & Eligibility
Any Publican, Bar Owner or Group of musicians representing a Pub is invited to enter to win the coveted prize and title of “Best Traditional Pub Sessionâ€. The maximum group size is 8 and the minimum is 5. Entry fee is €20 per musician. Musicians/performers must be over 18 years of age and must represent a pub session rather than a group of musicians. Entries are accepted from any country.
Seisiun na h-Eireann is a non-profit event run by the community for the community. No person or business stands to gain financially from the running of the festival.
Festival Format
The format is as follows; there are 4 pubs in Quin. Each group plays for one hour on Friday night or Saturday afternoon in one of the 4 pubs. There will be approx 2-3 session groups per night/afternoon in each pub on Fri night & Sat afternoon depending on number of entries. Straws are drawn in order to determine which groups play where and when. Half of these go through to Saturday night and play for an hour again. The 4 finalists, one from each pub, play on Sunday and play 2 sets each at 5pm in the Village hall before the announcement of the winner and runners up.
Judges and Judging Criteria
The judges comprise both qualified adjudicators and accomplished traditional musicians and will not be made known to the musicians at the time of playing. All of the Adjudicators will be present at the 4 public houses throughout the weekend.
Adjudication criteria will include technical musical aspects such as tuning and tempo, etc. A portion of the scores will be allocated to general presentation and most points are given for THE OVERALL STANDARD OF MUSIC.
Below are the guidelines given to the judges;
Overall Standard of Music: 40 Marks (variety of music)
Arrangement: 30 Marks (humour / lightness & blend)
Instrumentation: 10 marks (tuning / tempo)
Choice of Tunes / Song: 10 Marks
Presentation: 10 Marks (audience enjoyment / participation)
Although diversity in music is appreciated, it should be noted that the emphasis for adjudication purposes is on traditional Irish music. Variety in performance is also welcomed, including song, recitation and dance.
Accommodation
A limited amount of discounted accommodation is available to competitors during the festival. This will be arranged through the groups’ allocated liaison person. Discounted accommodation will be allocated on a first come first served basis once the application and fee has been received and accepted.
