Irish Potato Famine Information and Guide
The Irish Potato Famine, also called The Great Famine or The Great Hunger (Irish: An Gorta Mór), is the name given to a famine which struck Ireland between 1846 and 1849. The Famine was at least fifty years in the making, due the disastrous balance between British economic policy, destructive farming methods, and the unfortunate appearance of "the Blight" —the potato fungus that almost instantly destroyed the major food source for the majority population. The immediate after-effects of The Famine continued until 1851, and in the five years from 1846 some 750,000 deaths are attributed to starvation (estimates vary), and much the same number of people emigrated to Britain, the United States, Canada and Australia (see the Irish Diaspora). Catholic Emancipation Information and Guide
Catholic Emancipation was a process in Great Britain and Ireland in the late 18th century and early 19th century which involved reducing and removing many of the restrictions on Roman Catholics which had been introduced by the Act of Uniformity and the Test Acts. Requirement to abjure the spiritual authority of the Pope and transubstantiation placed major burdens on Roman Catholics, though they did receive papal absolution to make false oaths in order to avoid these. The first Catholic Relief Act was passed in 1778; subject to an oath against Stuart claims to the throne and the civil jurisdiction of the Pope, it allowed Roman Catholics in Great Britain to own property, inherit land, and join the army. Reaction against this led to the Gordon riots in 1780. Further relief was given in 1791. The Irish Parliament passed similar Acts between 1778 and 1793. Visit this site to find out MORE...,
