Ballybay Development Association
Ballybay Development Association Ltd., (BDA), the promoter of this project was established in 1993 in response to the closure of Ballybay Meats and the consequent economic devastation to the town and its environs. BDA set about raising £100,000 and acquiring one of 34 derelict buildings in the town. Through funding from the International Fund for Ireland and LEADER, its flagship project Birch Court was officially opened in October 1998 at a final cost of £450,000. In October 2000, two years after the official opening of its flagship project Birch Court, Ballybay Development Association (BDA) had firmly established itself as a sustainable community company, which, in addition to providing business and employment support continues to deliver a vibrant Creative Arts Programme to children within a ten mile radius of the town. The BDA has become a focal point for local clubs and societies. BDA has recently turned its attention to the inability of the town and its lakeland hinterland to attract visitors in significant numbers particularly in a climate when tourism is becoming the fastest growing indigenous industry in the country, as shown by preliminary research carried out by the BDA. ,
