The Strange Quark Gallery
The Strange Quark gallery is a facility in Mallow thatr sjhowcases both my work (Mel) and (cureently) that of nione other artists. Mel trainerd in Fine Art in London, progressing from night shool through a system of scho;larships to the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. Mel has been practicing as a painter (though options in photography, print and computer art were also taken at College) since 2000. Mel uses an impasto technique, concentrating on light and texture, and the work is semi-figurative semi-abstract. MEL has had a number of both joint and solo exhibitions in Ireland and London, and the work has ben well-received the remainder of the artists (which includes a scuptress and a photographer) are local to the Cork area. Mel gravitates to somewyhat more abstract and experimental work but anything is considered providing it is of a particular standard. The aim of the gallery is to encourage an interest in Art in the locality, and also to give a chance to 'new' artists, who may just be beginning to start the process of exhibition and sales (although MEL and a couple of the other artists show ARE established, and have considerable experience with exhibiting and selling work). prices and commission for the gallery are kept as low as posible , not to devalue the work, but to make it accessible to those that might like it, regardless of income . Artists have the right to set whatever price they wish for their art, but a reasonably low price is encouraged The facility is 'relaxed' and attempts to avoid the austerity of most gallery spaces. it is a place where one can 'drop in' and look at the work in an unpressured way, and see what artists local to the area is up to,
